Snippets from the Past - 2016 No.15
In 1969 a young Kenmore College Student minister working with the Lowood Church of Christ was the guest speaker at the Youth Service for our 3rd Anniversary. 11 years later, from the Devonport Church of Christ, Tasmania, Geoff Risson, wife Margaret and family accepted our invitation to minister at Arana Hills. Geoff was inducted February 10, 1980.
Taking on a new church is one thing, but Geoff also had the responsibility of providing support and leadership for the new work at Samford. To assist both churches, Kenmore Christian College students John Cupitt (Arana Hills) and Greg Muller (Samford) were appointed on a part-time basis. John was given the responsibility of assisting with the youth. Youth Encounter, an Arana Hills ministry which had been operating since 1976, organised a "Coffee Shop" to encourage fellowship and outreach for Samford, Pine Rivers, Zillmere and local youth groups.
Towards the end of Glen Stibbe's ministry, yet another leap of faith had been taken. The board approached the owner of the block of land next to the church to see if he would be willing to sell. One could ask why the block remained vacant ever since the estate was released some 20 years earlier. Who would want to build a house next to a church, other than perhaps the church or a member of the church, might be a quick response. I like to believe God had plans for that block long before Churches of Christ bought the first 2 blocks in 1966.
The owner said yes, for a purchase price of $11000. To help defray the cost a large drawing of a brick wall was erected in the church and anyone could buy a brick and colour it in for $5.00. The full amount was paid off in 2 years.
Other activities and events during the year included a Family Camp at Camp Warrawee.
